Most of us have all relished a lot of the World Baseball Classic games over the past couple of weeks. There has been a lot of dislike over the fact that the World Baseball Classic takes place during spring training. Many fans, and probably a few General Managers, feel that the risk of injury is too great. After all, clubs are spending an increasing amount on players' contracts and thus have a vested interest to be protective, maybe even over protective. For good reason, the clubs realize that their prized talent cannot be exposed to that level of intensity so early in the spring; baseball players are creatures of habit like most of us and to disrupt that can be a dangerous game.
Baseball has done large-scale research on the World Baseball Classic and whether or not that increases the likely hood of an injury. What they found is that while there have been injuries, they see no direct connection to playing in the World Baseball Classic and injuries. I'm not sure I believe that, but I want to! The fact is that these players are put into some very competitive and intense games; the emotions of those games can make them extend themselves beyond what their bodies may ready for. A simple reference would be the all-out free-for-all during the World Baseball Classic last week; this was not something that should have ever happened, but it did. The biggest reason is because of the run differential rule that the World Baseball Classic and all the powers that be have put in place. To that point, you can bet the mortgage that the World Baseball Classic will have changed this rule by the time 2017 rolls around.
The World Baseball Classic is a great idea and draws interest to the game from all over the world. This is sure to have a positive impact on the game itself. Outside of the USA, countries look forward to this affair and take it seriously. While the USA takes pride in competing the World Baseball Classic, to countries including the Dominican Republic that is war. Admittedly, this is often a possibility that you'll most of these countries to produce what form of baseball abilities they are producing.
One such possibility that a large number of players who were unknown prior to the World Baseball Classic to be seen by teams throughout Major League Baseball; many anonymous players end up with very decent contracts right after solid performance. To some extent, this will be viewed as lottery ticket; some times you win and some times you don't. That's a very simplified view, but there is also some truth to that for many players internationally.
Personally I think the competition is a great advertisement for the game of baseball. It does a great job of showing the talent that is out there, and putting it into a format and competition that we can all enjoy. Whether we like to disclose it or not, a true baseball enthusiast can't help but enjoy the World Baseball Classic for what it is; great competition by some of the best players from all over the world.
