Kazaky: Dance Boy's Band

By Jerome V. Derga

Kazaky (also known as The Boys in Heels) is a Ukrainian all-male dance group, made up of Oleg Zhezhel (a founder and choreographer), Artur Gaspar, 28, a former student at the St. Petersburg State Ballet Theater; Francesco Borgato, 22, a mop-headed Italian who replaced a founding member, Stas Pavlov, in 2011; and Kyryll Fedorenko, 21, a onetime competitive ballroom dancer.

Assembled in Kiev by Zhezhel, a choreographer, the team has released several songs who have become popular online. The group confronts gender norms by fusing masculine and feminine attributes together, especially by regularly wearing stiletto high heel sandals.

"Kazaky" is Russian for "Cossacks". The Cossacks stood a very prominent role from the shaping of Ukraine's national history and culture. Nevertheless the group claims that the name has nothing regarding the Cossacks. Instead, they say the Japanese language and culture have influenced their name.

For the last year, they've got earned high praise from trend gatekeepers like the fashion editor Anna Dello Russo, the photography duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and also the designers Dan and Dean Caten of DSquared2, who invited the four men to seal their spring men's presentation recently. In an assessment of that demonstrate for Style.com, Tim Blanks labeled the team four dizzy queens with a post-Gaga get-outta-my-way-bitch shtick.

Ever since then, with numerous thoughts about YouTube of the music videos like Love and In the very center, the boys of Kazaky have dug their five-and-a-half-inch heels firmly to the world stage. Campy but deadpan, they're arguably part of the boy band revival, however fringe, a result of their European contemporaries One Direction along with the Wanted. Their flaw-free dance moves also access the interest in shows like So You Imagine You Are Able To Dance along with the resurfacing from the 90s Vogue-ball aesthetic in New York's underground party all night atmosphere. (The group maintains they do almost all their own choreography.)

The background music, thumping electro clash with blunt phrases like Love me/Hate me/I dont care, is the sort of fluff you might find around the Eurovision song contest. As well as in an era in which Rhianna gabs on about subverting gender and sexuality norms, these fellows strut the strut.

Kazakys widest experience of date, perhaps, was after they were chosen by Madonna, famous for cultivating emerging dance talent, to be her backup dancers for her Girl Gone Wild video, which in fact had its debut in March. The clips stylist, the Oscar-nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips, were required to create custom women's high heel sandals hacked down from hooker boots, as Ms. Phillips called them, per part of this rock band because she was can not find shoes in their sizes by the deadline.

Kazaky is sustainability is going to be tested using the relieve their still-untitled first album, tentatively planned for before fall, plus a songs video for Barcelona, its single. They are currently on the worldwide AMen tour. A clothing line in collaboration with their stylist, Anna Osmekhina, is planned.
